Gold production at the Kumtor mine showed strong growth in Kyrgyzstan in the first quarter of 2023, the gold mining company said.
For three months of the current year, a total of 80 thousand 511 ounces, or 2.5 tons of gold, were mined.
Compared to the corresponding period in 2022, when 66 thousand 474 ounces, or 2.1 tons, were mined, the increase was 21.1%.
Specialists primarily explain the significant increase in production by the exceptionally high gold content in the ore processed at the plant.
During the first quarter of 2023, the average gold grade in ore delivered to the plant was 2.34 grams per tonne. For comparison: for the same period in 2022, the average gold grade was 2.27 grams per ton.
Until 2021, the Kumtor mine was owned by the Canadian company Centerra Gold. After coming to power, the current leadership of Kyrgyzstan introduced external management at Kumtor, removed the former management, and after an amicable agreement with the Canadian company, completely nationalized the Kumtor company.
