The EU has no plans to impose sanctions on Kazakhstan because of its cooperation with Russia, EU international special envoy for sanctions David O'Sullivan said, Interfax reports.
"We recognize and we know the special nature of relations between Kazakhstan and Russia. There is no reason for us to impose any sanctions on Kazakhstan. We do not plan to impose sanctions on Kazakhstan and on third countries, including Kazakhstan," he said. O'Sullivan in Astana.
He noted that the EU opposes Russia's military actions in Ukraine, this is "the most important message." "Kazakhstan decides for itself what kind of relations to build with Russia, what message to convey" to the leadership of Russia, the EU special envoy said. He recalled that there is a well-known decision of the International Criminal Court, "but each country decides for itself whether to follow this decision or not."
"We do not impose sanctions on third countries. In exceptional cases, we can impose sanctions on certain companies, enterprises, if it is proved that they really help to circumvent sanctions," the EU special envoy added.
"At the moment we don't have enough detailed, detailed information according to which we can determine that this or that company is really helping to circumvent sanctions. Now we are studying all the materials, all the information that we have," O'Sullivan said.
"The most important task is to obtain accurate and reliable information, we are working in this direction with the Kazakh authorities. And if such cases are identified, proven, we will work together with our Kazakh partners to find a solution to this problem and how to stop circumventing sanctions," he said.
