Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang voiced the demand of the Chinese authorities for the lifting of unilateral sanctions by the United States and other Western countries against Afghanistan, TASS reports.
The statement was made by the Chinese Foreign Minister at a press conference following the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan's neighboring countries in Samarkand. These countries include Russia, Iran, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, the agency said.
"We insist that the United States and other Western countries should lift the unilateral sanctions that have been applied to Afghanistan," said Qin Gang.
He stressed that Beijing strongly opposes the measures being worked out in line with the thinking of the Cold War. China does not accept strategies aimed at intensifying confrontation between warring blocs, the Chinese minister said.
"Afghanistan should become a new platform for cooperation," Qin Gang added.
He also pointed to the extremely important role of the states of the region, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the UN in settling the Afghan issue.
Qin Gan paid a visit to Uzbekistan, where he met with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, after his first foreign visit as a minister to Moscow.
