In the Chinese city of Xi'an in the north-west of the country, the China-Central Asia summit began its work. The summit participants are the heads of all the countries of Central Asia and China. The summit gathered for the first time as part of the presidents of the participating countries.
The official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Wenbin, during a conversation with the press, noted that the summit has "an epoch-making significance in the development of relations between China and the states of Central Asia."
At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the summit is attended by: President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
It is expected that during the summit the parties will sign important political documents and outline new milestones of cooperation in various fields, as well as discuss major international and regional issues of mutual interest.
The summit will end its work on May 19.
Prior to the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping held bilateral talks separately with the President of Kazakhstan and then with the President of Kyrgyzstan.
