The Central Asian Regional Office of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent will be opened in Bishkek, Secretary General of the Organization Jagan Chapagein said at a meeting with President Sadyr Japarov. He is on a visit to Kyrgyzstan, the press service of Zhaparov reports.
During the talks between Zhaparov and Charagein, "priority issues of bilateral cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the IFRC, the organization of project activities in the country for disaster relief, humanitarian aid and social support, were discussed.
The President of Kyrgyzstan noted the adoption in 2022, at the initiative of Kyrgyzstan, of the resolution "Sustainable Mountain Development" at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, aimed at preserving mountain ecosystems. In light of the increasing negative impact of global climate change on Kyrgyzstan, Zhaparova emphasized the importance of close cooperation with the IFRC in the field of reducing damage from natural disasters and taking preventive measures to reduce the scale of emergencies.
The President of Kyrgyzstan expressed gratitude to the Federation for the assistance provided especially in the fight against COVID and to the residents of the Batken region, who suffered during the conflict with Tajikistan.
In turn, Secretary General J. Chapagein noted the relevance of the climate agenda for the activities of the IFRC in Kyrgyzstan, as in high-mountainous countries, the consequences of climate change are felt earlier and more acutely than in most other countries of the world.
In conclusion, the parties expressed their readiness for further close cooperation between the IFRC and Kyrgyzstan."
